Merriam-Webster's 2025 word of the year is "slop". It refers to the poor quality, inferior content generated by AI to replace quality, human creativity. Recently, I was watching a business program where the interviewee was an AI generated image of the person. Instead of the interviewee being on camera, he replaced himself with this insulting image. He was the voice, but not the face on the camera. I was shocked and repulsed. There is a commercial on the same station featuring a lion. The lion's eyes and the background are disturbing. I can't watch it. Day after day I see copy or text that uses the wrong word, poor grammar, etc. It isn't a lack of education that I'm referring to, it is the lazy use of AI to write what should be someone's personal investment in a social media post.
I know our educational system is destroying our language.. "Educated people" can't conjugate verbs. They don't know the difference between subject and object pronouns. Kids think that using a period at the end of a sentence is abrasive.
AI looks at patterns. What it sees, it replicates. It doesn't know if something is corrupted or false or true. I read earlier this year that some company, as a test, put out false scientific information a few years ago. This year that same information was in seven different text books.
If we use AI as an enhancement for our work, with correct and strong prompts, it raises our productivity levels. When used as a substitute for common sense, logical reasoning or creativity, it perverts and corrupts future content and is simply SLOP.
